A Fiord, Not a Sound

Milford is a glacier-carved fiord, not a sound — how ice cut it, why the walls stand sheer, the tannin-stained freshwater layer, and Te Wahipounamu.

The naming mistake, and what it tells you

Milford Sound is misnamed, and the error is a useful way in. A sound is a drowned river valley — a wide, V-shaped channel the sea has flooded. Milford is a fiord: a steep, U-shaped trough gouged by glacial ice and then invaded by the sea when the ice withdrew. The V versus the U is the whole story. Early European surveyors, unfamiliar with fiords, borrowed the word "sound" for the whole south-west coast, and it stuck to Milford even though every other inlet in the region is properly a fiord — which is why the surrounding national park and its waters are called Fiordland. The Welsh sealer John Grono is generally credited with naming it after Milford Haven in Wales in the early 1800s.

How glaciers carved it

The carving took place over successive ice ages across the last two million years. Each time the climate cooled, a great river of ice built up in the valley and ground its way seaward, and ice does something water can't: it cuts downward as well as forward, plucking and grinding a flat-bottomed, vertical-walled trench far below sea level. Milford reaches 291 metres deep in places, much of that below the level of the modern sea, with a shallower "sill" of rock near the mouth where the glacier lost its power as it met the ocean. When the last glaciers melted, roughly ten to fifteen thousand years ago, the Tasman Sea flooded the empty trough, and the fiord as we see it was born. The near-vertical walls are the signature of ice, not rivers.

Ancient, stubborn rock

The reason the walls stand so sheer is the rock itself. Fiordland is built largely of extremely hard, ancient crystalline rock — gneiss, granite and diorite among them — some of the oldest and toughest in New Zealand, forged deep in the crust hundreds of millions of years ago. Softer rock would have slumped and weathered into gentler slopes long ago; this rock holds a near-vertical face and lets waterfalls fall clean down it. It's also why there's almost no soil: the rock sheds water rather than holding it, so the forest clings on in a thin mat of moss and roots rather than proper ground. Every so often that mat lets go in a "tree avalanche," a slab of vegetation sliding off the bare rock and leaving a pale scar you can spot from a cruise.

Te Wahipounamu: a World Heritage Area

Milford sits inside Te Wahipounamu, a UNESCO World Heritage Area covering New Zealand's south-west — Fiordland, Mount Aspiring, Aoraki/Mount Cook and Westland national parks together. UNESCO inscribed it in 1990, recognising both its natural drama and its role as one of the best modern examples of the plants and animals of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. The name means "the place of greenstone" in Māori, after the prized pounamu — nephrite jade — found in the region's rivers. For Ngāi Tahu, Fiordland is deeply significant country, and Milford's official name, Milford Sound / Piopiotahi, was formalised in a 1998 Treaty of Waitangi settlement. Piopiotahi refers to the piopio, an extinct native thrush, in a story tying the fiord to the demigod Māui.

The freshwater layer, a fiord's strangest feature

Milford holds one of the strangest tricks in marine ecology. All that rain, plus the freshwater pouring off the cliffs, floats a layer of fresh water several metres thick on top of the denser seawater below — and because it runs through the forest first, it's stained brown with tannins, like weak tea. That dark, freshwater lid cuts out much of the light near the surface, fooling deep-sea creatures into behaving as though they're far deeper than they are. The result is "deep-water emergence": species that normally live hundreds of metres down, most famously black coral, grow within reach of the surface here. It's why Milford has one of the world's most accessible black-coral communities, and why an underwater observatory in the fiord can show you, at snorkel depth, life that elsewhere needs a submersible.

Still being shaped

None of this is finished. Fiordland is one of the most tectonically active corners of New Zealand, sitting close to the boundary where the Australian and Pacific plates grind past and into each other; the whole region is slowly rising even as erosion tears at it. Heavy rain and steep rock make landslides routine — the pale scars on the walls are recent, and the road in is closed periodically by slips and washouts for exactly this reason. On a longer clock the glaciers could return; on a human one, you're looking at a landscape still visibly under construction, where a big storm can rearrange a hillside in a night. That restlessness is part of what you're seeing: not a finished monument, but a place caught mid-sentence.
